  1. The term birth rate is given to the number of 
  2. live births per thousand of the population 
  3. over a period of time, usually a year. 
  4. For example, a birth rate of 20 per thousand 
  5. would mean that 20 babies were being born per 
  6. thousand of the population. It is sometimes 
  7. called crude birth rate because it takes in 
  8. the whole population, including men and women
  9. who are too old to bear children. The UK's 
  10. birth rate has fallen from 28 at the
  11. beginning of the 20th century to 15 in 1996,
  12. owing to increased use of contraception, 
  13. better living standards, and falling infant
  14. mortality. The birth rate remains high in 
  15. developing countries, for example, in Malawi
  16. it stands at 57.
